Please spread the word and help us fill up our timeslots.  You can schedule an appointment using the attached, or go to https://tinyurl.com/ROTHE619.  (It’s not uncommon for folks to miss appointments or to be unable to donate, so a little overbooking may be helpful.  Walkups can also usually be accommodated.)

As most of you are aware, the various blood banks around town see a decreased supply in the summer months, so we schedule our drive to mitigate that effect.  It’s a great thing to do, so set aside a little time in your schedule to make a difference.

Thanks in advance for doing your good deed of the day on 6/19!

Journey of an Author: A Local Writer Shares Her Stories and Inspiration

Jul 14, 2025 11:45 AM

Mary Sue Shy Anton is an author, writer, and editor. She was born on a dairy farm near the Mississippi River during the Great Depression. One of her most vivid childhood memories is the 1937 flood, when her family evacuated in the middle of the night and lived in the local courthouse for several weeks.

At age 25, after leaving the homeplace to seek her fortune elsewhere, she met Arthur David Anton, recently discharged from the Air Force. After their marriage, she put her husband through school, working as a secretary with a secret clearance at an Air Force base.  With two small children, they settled in southeast Missouri until her husband pursued his dream of becoming a physician. The author returned to work, and Art received his M.D. degree from the University of Missouri, but not before their third child was born. In 1969, the family moved to Texas for Art’s medical practice.

Mary Sue is a graduate of Loretto Academy, Kansas City, Missouri and received a B.A. in history from the University of Houston-Clear Lake (Texas).  She has worked as a computer tutor, genealogy lecturer, soybean farmer, freelance writer and editor.  After publishing a genealogy book with two cousins in 1994, she began writing popular histories.

Today she lives  in League City, Texas where she used her time during the Coronavirus pandemic to write this, her fourth book. Her siblings contributed their own stories to round out her memories and chronicle of her life.

Space Center Rotary Club Anniversary
Aug 06, 2025

The Rotary Club of Space Center

Chartered August 6th, 1964

The Rotary Club of Space Center  has an outstanding community service history since August 1964 due to its diversified members, all with a passion for "Service Above Self".  Not only this, but the Club shares a national heritage in that it grew alongside the manned space program located at the National Aeronautical Space Agencyโ€™s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The bond between the Club and the Johnson Space Center and the friendship that has developed is one of the Clubโ€™s enduring values and a rich heritage.

With honor the Club carries the name โ€œSpace Centerโ€ and its banner reflects the manned space program. Many of the former and current members were pioneers in the manned space program and several of the earlier astronauts were honorary members of the Club. There is a wealth of experience, abilities, and talents among its members such that long time member and President of the Club (1990-1991) Billy R. Smith said that the Club was coined the name, โ€œThe Can Do Club".

According to the Charter Presentation Program, the presentation was held on September 28, 1964 at 7:00 PM at the Houston Yacht Club Shoreacres, La Porte, Texas. Ellis R. Bareiss, Governorโ€™s Representative presided. District Governor Edwin G. Bracher presented the Charter to Ivan E. Brown, President Rotary Club of Space Center. The Rotary Club of La Porte was the sponsoring club.

Our Club held regular luncheon meetings on Mondays at 12:15 pm at the Kings Inn. (Note: Monday was chosen because it was the best day to meet due of the extensive travel done by  the Rotarians who were with the manned space program.  Likewise noon was the best time during the day to meet  since there were standup meetings every day the first thing each morning.  Per  Bob  Wren May 1, 2015.)

Club's Arrangements Committee Anniversary
Aug 27, 2025

We commemorate this date as one step closer to the formation of our Club back in 1964
Congratulations Space Center!

In a letter dated August 27, 1964 to Mr. President from Fred Lane, Arrangements Committee, detailed several things that had to be done. Fred Lane noted that Rotary International had indicated a special interest in the new club due to its location and the type of membership which included Gordon Cooper, one of the original astronauts.

The letter continued with the arrangements noting that each Rotary Club in District 589 would want to participate to the fullest; therefore, each club was asked to contribute $25.00 toward operating items the new club would need, such as Banner, Flag, Bell, Gavel, Speakerโ€™s Stand, Lapel Buttons, and Identification Buttons.

9.11 A Day of Service and Remembrance
Sep 11, 2025

"The nation changed forever on September 11, 2001. Many Americans remember a country before and a country after, and for many young Americans, only a country after. Terrorist attacks causing tragic loss of life at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in sight of the nationโ€™s capital, and a quiet field in southern Pennsylvania led to conversations and reflection on American identity, patriotism, security, and service that resonate today."
