Shattering the Stigma Surrounding People With Disabilities
Feb 09, 2026 11:45 AM
I am a computer systems engineer with a master's degree in family science. Since 2018, I have been the founding president of a non-profit organization called "Familia Incluyente A.C." (Inclusive Family Association). As a person with cerebral palsy, I have become deeply aware of the importance of inclusion within families for the empowerment and full development of people with disabilities. I am passionate about my work and strive to contribute to this cause through solidarity and strategic initiatives, which is why I consider myself an advocate for people with disabilities and their families. |

HAPPY FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY!
Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris After setting up his law practice in Chicago, Harris gathered several business associates to discuss the idea of forming an organization for local professionals. He envisioned a place where professionals of diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. On 23 February 1905, Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey gathered at Loehr’s office in Room 711 of the Unity Building in downtown Chicago. This was the first Rotary club meeting. “I was sure that there must be many other young men who had come from farms and small villages to establish themselves in Chicago ... Why not bring them together? If others were longing for fellowship as I was, something would come of it.” Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world. To learn more about Rotary International click here.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL WOMEN IN ROTARY!
On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership.
The Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise, California (formerly Larkspur Landing), is chartered on 28 May. It becomes the first club after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to have women as charter members. Sylvia Whitlock, of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, becomes the first female Rotary club president. For more information about Women in Rotary History, click here.

The Rotary Club of Space Center Chartered August 6th, 1964 The Rotary Club of Space Center has an outstanding community service history since August 1964 due to its diversified members, all with a passion for "Service Above Self". Not only this, but the Club shares a national heritage in that it grew alongside the manned space program located at the National Aeronautical Space Agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The bond between the Club and the Johnson Space Center and the friendship that has developed is one of the Club’s enduring values and a rich heritage. With honor the Club carries the name “Space Center” and its banner reflects the manned space program. Many of the former and current members were pioneers in the manned space program and several of the earlier astronauts were honorary members of the Club. There is a wealth of experience, abilities, and talents among its members such that long time member and President of the Club (1990-1991) Billy R. Smith said that the Club was coined the name, “The Can Do Club". According to the Charter Presentation Program, the presentation was held on September 28, 1964 at 7:00 PM at the Houston Yacht Club Shoreacres, La Porte, Texas. Ellis R. Bareiss, Governor’s Representative presided. District Governor Edwin G. Bracher presented the Charter to Ivan E. Brown, President Rotary Club of Space Center. The Rotary Club of La Porte was the sponsoring club. Our Club held regular luncheon meetings on Mondays at 12:15 pm at the Kings Inn. (Note: Monday was chosen because it was the best day to meet due of the extensive travel done by the Rotarians who were with the manned space program. Likewise noon was the best time during the day to meet since there were standup meetings every day the first thing each morning. Per Bob Wren May 1, 2015.)
