Since then, Rotarians and their family members distribute an average between 300-400 roses to different nursing homes, assisting living and independent residences of the Clear Lake Area/League City. When Jerry’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer, he did not hesitate to include a location with about 35 residents with Alzheimer.
Jerry’s motto to lead this beautiful project was that he felt it was a great opportunity to give back to men and women (who sadly some of them were left alone) and bringing them smiles. He wanted to make them feel cared and loved on a special day.
The recipients are always excited and grateful to get a rose of their own on St. Valentin’s Day. Some are in tears while others give you a big hug. Jerry remembers several years ago, when he gave a woman a rose, she gratefully gave him a hug. When Jerry approached one of the men, he asked Jerry if he could give the rose to anyone he wanted. The man got up and gave the rose to the woman who has hugged Jerry. She started to cry and hugged him. It was a very moving and special moment to see them, Jerry said.
In previous years, volunteers went to lunch afterwards and share their experiences. The stories moved them deeply and they were proud to be part of it.
Rotarians look forward to participating every year. It’s a blessing to give from the heart and make people happy, Jerry stated.
Jerry guesses that through all these years, we have brought about 7500 smiles from our seniors... and those are a lot of smiles.
Our Club spends about $1,400.00 per year to fulfill the mission of bringing about 400 smiles every year. Jerry asks: "how much is a hug worth? The is no price for it, for a senior who gratefully smiles back to you with his or her sparkles eyes.” This is why is important to continue supporting our Fundraising Events, so we can continue with our missions, and serving above self.

Thank you Jerry Smith for 18 years fulfilling a very heartwarming mission on St. Valentine’s Day.
